At the request of the majority of parents attending Kilfenora NS the Board of Management facilitates the provision of Speech and Drama and Swimming during school hours. Each family is expected to contribute towards the cost of these activities. A trained Speech and Drama teacher provides weekly instruction to each class and in co-operation with the teaching staff prepares those children interested for Féile Luimní, Leinster School of Speech and Drama Exams and a concert for the entire school every second year. While the school concert involves the children playing musical instruments, dancing, singing etc. as part of each class’s act, it is not a platform for individual performances in any of the arts.
Swimming classes are provided at Seaworld, Lahinch by trained instructors working there. It is necessary to hire a bus to transport the pupils and the accompanying teacher(s) to and from the pool. Pupils avail of a set of 10 lessons per year.
These activities are incorporated into the Physical Education and Arts programmes of the school. The Board of Management earnestly requests each family to co-operate with these arrangements by authorizing and encouraging their child/children to participate.
From time to time the Board of Management may decide to invite other visiting specialists to visit the school and instruct the pupils, for example; a children’s author, historian, sports coach wildlife expert etc. in order to defray the cost of these activities a reasonable contribution is suggested. The Board of Management requests the co-operation of every family in contributing to all activities. Families experiencing hardship should consult the Principal.
This policy will be reviewed whenever the Board of Management and staff deem it necessary, otherwise every three years. Families were consulted regarding Speech and Drama and swimming classes in June ’03, ’06 and ’09, therefore a review will be necessary in June 2018.
This policy was ratified by the Board of Management in June 2017
